Mount, a professional stenographer and typewriter in Osaswatomie, Kansas, had spent several years in Louisiana, and considers parts of the state "the garden spots of the earth." Mount read an article in the Kanasas City Journal newspaper which prompted the request for information.

Lee discusses in considerable detail the benefits of buying acreage in the Lake Arthur area for the proposed colony in Southwest Louisiana. Gaston had recently traveled in the area, and Lee expresses dismay that he was not able to bid him farewell.
