Land Abstract
Description
Abstract of Title detailing the ownership of land on which the current City of Fairhope is located. Dated 1817-1952.
Laurent Millaudon (1786-1868), a New Orleans merchant and real estate developer, acquired the Baron Louis W. De Feriet claim of two tracts on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay to the south of the William A. Patterson tract and north of what was the Weggs Plantation from Arthur Lee Sims in 1837-1838. This area was known as Clifton.
Millaudon and his partners in the City Company of Alabama planned to develop a 9650-lot city (called Alabama City) to eventually compete with the city of Mobile. Millaudon was president of the company.
The plan for Alabama City failed, and by the early 1840s, the City Company of Alabama was selling off lots.
In 1858, the U. S. Congress confirmed Millaudon's title to the land. After Millaudon's death in 1868, his heirs sold the land in parcels.
This Abstract of Title follows the ownership of a portion of the land until 1952. Included is information about the estates of John Bowen, Delia Oswalt Nichols and others.
Maps drawn by the abstrators, are included.
