Video interview with Charles Ingersoll (Charles Bernard Ingersoll) dated 1992/01/04. Interviewed by Flo Simmons and Ruth Rockwell. NOTE: This video runs 1 hour and 17 minutes when a partial interview of Gale Rowe starts at that point in error. Mr. Rowe's entire interview is available at FSTC-V0015 or by searching his name.. Charles Ingersoll was born in Fairhope. His family came to Baldwin County as early as 1840. His parents were Fred Puterbaugh Ingersoll, who came to Fairhope in 1920 or 1921 as a 15-year old, and Sadie Mae Winberg Ingersoll. The family was in the dairy business, and Charlie later bought the Fairhope Cleaners. He was a director of the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation from 1979-1984, and served as president of the FSTC from 1985-1999. This was the time of the Rezner lawsuit and Mr. Ingersoll talks about the Supreme Court case and the strength of the FSTC constitution, the unique history of Fairhope and the belief of cooperative individualism. Mr. Ingersoll talked about the people he met in Fairhope growing up here, including the Fairhope High School band director John Novak, and John Huffman. He discussed different city administrations' efforts to build the community in cooperation with the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation. Mr. Ingersoll discussed the development of Fairhope and the broad diversity and backgrounds of people who make Fairhope unique and the ability of Fairhope to change with the times.
