Photograph dated August,1936 of Henry Stuart (1858-1946) in front of his Round House in Montrose, Alabama. Stuart constructed the house himself in 1925-1926; details of the front door of the structure are clearly visible showing steps down to the entrance. Stuart's skillet and cup are hanging on the oak tree. Henry James Stuart named his property Tolstoy Park. Here, the barefoot Mr. Stuart is in conversation with Converse Harwell and potter Edith Harwell who are visiting the area from Charlotte, N. C. The Harwells would move to Fairhope in 1938, opening their Pinewood Pottery (located on the site of the Eastern Shore Art Association). Edith Norman Harwell (1904-1988) was already a well-known potter prior to the move, and became affiliated with the School of Organic Education (Organic School) upon her arrival. Stuart, a weaver, occasionally taught at the Organic School. See a related picture taken the same day at FMH_2058-2059. This photograph is from a scrapbook donated to the Fairhope Museum of History by Stuart's family. Over his years in the Fairhope-Montrose area (1923-1944), Stuart sent pictures to his sons and families in Oregon with information on the back. He has typed the message on this photo with his signature. Search "Stuart Scrapbook" in these online archives for many other interesting pictures from the scrapbook.
