Photograph by Frank Stewart, The Picture Man, dated approximately 1925 of the Farmers Cooperative Creamery Company established in 1922 in Fairhope, Alabama. The building was located at the northwest corner of Bancroft Street and Fairhope Avenue. The Farmers Cooperative Creamery went into default in 1926. A.O. Berglin bought the building in 1926 for his Fairhope Ice and Creamery Company. (Berglin's company was formed in 1908 and was located at the beach beginning in 1909 until 1926.) The company was family-owned until bought out by Barber Pure Milk Company in 1961. Barber's, doing business as Azalea Dairy Products, closed this Fairhope location in 1963 when operations moved to Mobile. There are two water tanks in this picture: the one behind the building on the right has the Azalea brand sign painted on the tank - the brand name of Berglin's ice cream, milk and other products. The large water tank on the left is the Town of Fairhope's tank used between 1915-1935. From the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation Archives. |
