Cabinet card photograph c.1905 of Dr. George Alonzo Mershon with his mother Leah Grauel Mershon, daughter Ada Mershon Kearns Johnson, and granddaughter Luta Kearns Johnson Carley. The large Mershon family (origially from Iowa) had close ties to the founding and development of the single tax colony of Fairhope, Alabama. Dr. G. A. Mershon practiced medicine in early Fairhope, and his siblings Clara Mershon Gaston, Arthur H. Mershon and Nathaniel Mershon were important founders. Leah Grauel Mershon and husband C. H. Mershon were also early settlers. Luta Kearns Johnson Carley was born in Fairhope in 1896; her parents Ada Mershon Kearns and Jasper T. Kearns would leave the Fairhope colony that year and later divorce. From the Paul M. Gaston Collection, Fairhope Single Tax Corporation Archives. |
