Description |
Photograph likely dated in the 1920s of William Alfred Lewis (1858-1932) and wife Rosetta Lewis (1863-1950) and family members. They are sitting on the steps of their home on Ingleside Street in Fairhope, Alabama. This house was torn down in 2022. Alfred Lewis was the son of John Lewis and Nancy Lewis, former slaves who settled on land which would later become part of the Fairhope Industrial Association. For information on the Lewis family, refer to the chapter on Mrs. Lewis in "Women of Fair Hope" by Paul M. Gaston, or search in these online Archives "Nancy Lewis." Note: a duplicate picture appears in this file. Although damaged, the image is of better quality and is offered as an option for Archives users. From the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation Archives.
