Photograph c.1917-1920 by Frank Stewart, The Picture Man, of the Peoples Railroad car on the tracks in front of the Fairhope Pharmacy on Fairhope Avenue in Fairhope, Alabama. The car which was damaged in the hurricane of 1916 and lost part of its front end, is headed west toward the bayfront. See FSTC-0956 for a similar photograph. The small concrete block building beside the Pharmacy was built in 1913 for G. W. Clifton and his confectionery shop. At the time of this picture, Clifton had sold the business, and it was a Cafe. Wheeler's General Merchandise store (aka Wheeler's Mercantile), owned by Dewey Wheeler sits at the southeast corner of Fairhope Avenue and Section Street. Note the Power Poles installed in 1915. From the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation Archives. Courtesy of the Fairhope Museum of History, Donelson Collection. |
