Photograph of the Fairhope Garage and Livery (aka Fairhope Garage) c.1912. The business was owned by D. A. Russell and was located on Fairhope Avenue at the intersection with Bayview Street on the southwest corner. Mr. Russell sold to T. J. Klumpp in August 1917. Klumpp ran Fairhope Taxi Service and Klumpp's Garage there. Later Klumpp became the owner of the Chevrolet dealership in town, and changed the facade to better see the new model cars inside. By 1968, Klumpp moved his business to Section Street, and the building became a game room, another car dealership, a storage facility and then offices for Poser Business forms. The building was torn down in the mid 1990s. Klumpp's used car lot was behind the buiilding along Stacks Gully. Over the years, the gully was used as a 'car grave' for old vehicles. Many old cars have been found there. This picture is from a promotional brochure titled "Fairhope, Alabama The All-Year Resort Of The South" which is available at PMG-5020-5092. From the Paul M. Gaston Collection, Fairhope Single Tax Corporation Archives. Special thanks to Fairhope historian Donnie Barrett for details about this building. |
