Photograph postcard by Frank Stewart, the Picture Man, titled "Cross & Co Dairy, Fairhope, Alabama. " There is a handwritten message on the reverse side postmarked on December 6, 1910 from the post office in Summerdale, Alabama. Husband and wife Capt. J. R. Cross (Capt. Jack Cross) and Eloise Gardner Cross moved to Fairhope in 1908 to establish Cross & Co Dairy Farm as a model of modern dairy farming. The concrete silo seen in the picture was 12 x 33 feet with a capacity of 65 tons for silage (according to the Fairhope Courier of November 12, 1909). They were in business with Mr. H. F. Ring. Capt and Mrs. Cross later moved "into town" and managed The Gables Hotel, a business owned by Mrs. Lydia J. Newcomb Comings. In 1925, the Crosses built and operated The Fairhope Hotel at the northwest corner of Fairhope Avenue and Summit Street.
