Iconic photograph dated 1897 of the town pump, Mershon Brothers Store and other buildings in early Fairhope, Alabama. The photographer is unknown, but the rights to the picture were purchased by Frank Stewart, The Picture Man, in 1914. Stewart titled the photo "P.O. Corner in the early days-1897." The post office was housed in the Mershon Brothers store. The store was located on the northwest corner of Section Street and Farhope Avenue - the business center of the town then and today. This file includes a good cropped version of the picture. There are several other versions of this photograph in these online Archives; this photo is the only one available in black and white; the others are sepia-toned.
