Photographs and Historic Sites Survey Update Form dated 2014 of 218 Fairhope Avenue in Fairhope, Alabama. Built in 1935-1936 by Oswald Forster and Sons. This building is located in the Downtown Fairhope Historic District. See 34_71_001-127 for all buildings in this District or search "Downtown Fairhope Historic District." This commercial building was called The Mecca (The Mecca Service Station, The Mecca Filling Station), and operated as such until c.1952 when other businesses occupied the building (starting first with a radio repair shop). See 34_72_012 and 34_72_013 for additions to The Mecca on Church Street. The building is on the site of the home of Lydia J. Newcomb Comings and S. H. Comings, and was razed by the Forsters to build The Mecca in 1935. (The Comings turned part of their home into a hotel, The Gables Hotel, which opened in 1905.) From the Fairhope Public Library Collection and the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation Archives. |
