Photograph dated 1936 of the northeast corner of Fairhope Avenue and Section Street in downtown Fairhope, Alabama showing two water tanks. This unusual picture shows Fairhope's second water tank on the left. This tank was built in 1915-1916 as a replacement for the first water tank which stood at the intersection of Fairhope Avenue and Section Street and was over the town well. The new water tank (built 1936 and Fairhope's third) stands on the right of the older tank, which was dismantled shortly after the new tank went into service. The Town of Fairhope Power Plant is the building on the left, and Gaston Motor Company and service station is on the right. The sign for Gaston Motor Company, a Ford dealership owned by James E. Gaston, is seen. Fairhope historian Donnie Barrett recounts that when the site work was done behind the Fairhope Museum of History (old City Hall) for installation of the fountain, the old tank's foundation blocks were dug up. Barrett said they were concrete mixed with old clay pot shards, a typical use of kiln wasters at the time. From the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation Archives.
