Meeting MInutes of the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation for the year 1919. The Colony Council usually met twice per month. Includes financial reports, lease information and information about the business of the Corporation. At the Annual Meeting on January 27, 1919, the Colony was reported in good financial shape, the best in many years. The death of one of Fairhope's founders, S. S. Mann was noted. Overall, 1919 was a busy year with the FSTC focused on opening streets, maintaining public parks and the cemetery, leasing land, and working with the Town of Fairhope on street projects. The Corporation also began planning for the upcoming 25th anniversary of the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation to be celebrated in 1921. Of special interest in 1919: At the March 17, 1919 meeting, FSTC President Mrs. Lydia Jane Newcomb Comings (also head of the Fairhope Public Library) presented a plan to the Colony Council for an addition to the Fairhope Public Library Building. There are references to this for the next few months, with the Colony Council (April 7, 1919) agreeing on the addition and specifying it be a concrete block framed addition with stuccoed finish. At the October 6, 1919 meeting, Mrs. Comings reports the Library has more use due to the increase in space and an increase in the operating budget was needed, which the Council passed (to $15 per month) with the caveat that FSTC literature be prominetly displayed. N.B. Based on pictures of the Fairhope Public Library in this collection, the addition was on the north side of the original 1906 building. From the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation Archives. |
