Description |
Letter dated 7/6/1909 to Daniel Kiefer in Cincinnati, Ohio from E. B. Gaston. Gaston is writing about the status of the Fairhope Improvement Company. The situation is dire, with notes due on many of the properties the Company ownes. In addition, the Steamer Fairhope is in a losing proposition and needs to be sold; the Company has even borrowed $1,000 from "the ladies" at the Organic School to pay for repairs. At present, there are liabilities of $5,000 and $2,500 is due and pressing, plus the $6,000 owed to Joseph Fels. Gaston says he was "a chump for ever letting "the boys" put me under the burden of any such high financing, for keeping my paper up and looking after Colony interest generally is all that ought to be expected of me." Gaston says "I have reached the limit and simply cannot carry these responsibilities." He says he is on the verge of a breakdown, and asks Kiefer to come to Fairhope to help sort out the situation. |
