Letter to the Editor of the Fairhope Courier newspaper. 3/12/1923 edition written by Anne B. Call. Mrs. Call is addressing the situation with the People's Railroad Company (P. R. R.) and the Wharf. Mrs. Calls says the revenues from the Wharf have kept the P.R.R. afloat for ten years, and she is opposed to that continuing when Fairhope needs to invest in roads, not rails. She opposes the resumption of "up-town service" from the wharf to downtown as too expensive and not giving merchants the service they really need which is delivery to the door of the businesses. Mrs. Call, who is a Trustee of the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation, says "I do not wish to be considered as out of sympathy with the original purpose" of the railroad, but she says "its career has been unsuccessful." E. B. Gaston, editor of the Fairhope Courier responds to her points and defend the P.R.R. company as the reason the wharf business has increased so dramatically over the years, among other points. From the papers of Anne Bellangee Call. |
