Letter dated 9/22/1908 to E. B. Gaston from Joseph Fels, writing from London, England, about several issues. Fels thinks Gaston is correct in not responding to Mr. Albright's critical "sarcastic little sheet" The Eastern Shore newspaper, and feels it is too bad that R. F. Powell is so misunderstood . Fels refers to something bad that happened to Powell's daughter and is writing him about it. Powell has been embroiled in some controversy with Dr. Carr (likely about building/funding the manure wharf), and Fels thinks Powell should be careful. Fels thinks the Fairhope flyers Gaston has composed about Fairhope are "first-class" and says Gaston should send them to people like Bolton Hall and Daniel Kiefer to enclose with their correspondence. Fels is glad Gaston is so "cheerful about the future for Fairhope," but warns him that "in peaceful times it is as well to prepare for war." He is also pleased the bay boat has been doing well, and hopes Gaston, Frank Brown and R. F. Powell can get a resolution on the lawfuit about money owed on the first Fairhope bay boat steamer (which burned). Fels is concerned about agriculture, and thinks Gaston should plant a large garden to show others how to do it. Fels is pleased Gaston has decided not to oppose Dr. Harris Greeno, the mayor of the Town of Fairhope, in coming elections. Fels will be visitng Fairhope soon, and hopes Daniel Kiefer will come with him. |
