Letter dated 11/12/1907 to Louis Post in Chicago, Illinois from James Bellangee in Fairhope, Alabama. Bellangee is writing about the upcoming Single Tax Conference and the likelihood that two parties from Fairhope will attend the conference. Bellangee is concerned about airing Fairhope's problems in this forum, and feels neither party represents "the common people of Fairhope." Bellangee describes the men who plan to attend the conference by calling Mr. A. J. Wolf and Mr. E. Q. Norton "Iconoclasts" who "represent that class who cannot criticize without kicking." He says Mr. E. B. Gaston and Mr. Powell, the other party, are "dee-lighted optimists" and "will accept anything that comes their way and expect the approving plaudits of the throng while they label it the Single Tax." Bellangee tells Post that "the agitation for greater democracy has brought about a movement for a municipal corporation of (the) village of Fairhope which will probably be successful. * Bellangee says the real problems in Fairhope stem with how to spend the rents after collection, and subsequent problems between members of the Fairhope Single Tax Corportaion and non-members who are leasing lands. Bellangee says, however, "there is much love for the place and sympathy with its aims.". *Fairhope became a municipality in Alabama in 1908. |
