Letter to the editor of The Mobile Register newspaper dated 4/8/1906 from Joseph Fels in London, England. Fels is responding to an editorial by that newspaper which presented the opinion that the reason for the poverty of the working class and unemployment was due primarily to competition from foreign workers. Fels explains his opinion that the cause of poverty and unemployment was the denial of access to the land, leaving vast acerage unused, therefore non-productive. Fels' work in England with farm labor colonies, and his observation of changing policies are showing results. He points out the work of taxation on land values being undertaken at the Fairhope Colony. He calls the Fairhope experiement "the most important one in the way of an economic experiment, either in America or any other country. He says "if you will take the trouble to investigate Fairhope, with an open mind, it will probably occasion you to enlighten the public in the right direction." |
