Description |
Diary for 1934 written by Henry Stuart (1858-1946) of Montrose, Alabama. Mr. Stuart, sometimes known as The Hermit of Montrose, Ye Olde Weaver and a Modern Thoreau, made entries every day. Henry James Stuart was 65 years old when he moved from Nampa, Idaho to Montrose, Alabama in 1923 for health reasons. Montrose is near Fairhope, a single tax colony, so that might have had some bearing on why Stuart, an admirer of Henry George, chose to locate here. Although he had been employed in a variety of occupations over his life (in a hotel, mines), by the 19-teens, he had become a weaver, primarily of rugs for sale. In Montrose, he continued to make rugs for sale on the loom he shipped from Idaho. Two earlier diaries (1928 and 1929) are available in these online archives in which a still-vital Stuart records a very busy life (use keywords "Stuart Diaries" to access). Although the 76-year-old Stuart writes a page in the 1934 diary each day, the topics are not as wide-ranging - perhaps he has slowed down a bit- he is staying home more, recording his naps, meals, bread-making - but still reading, chopping wood, tending vegetables, seeing neighbors, entertaining visitors, and taking care of his own business. Note: a 1911-1914 Stuart diary, written before his move to Alabama, is available in these archives.
