Fairhope Courier newspapers for 1900. The paper was published twice monthly and all 24 editions are 8 pages. The masthead changed several times in September -October. Two pages in the February 1, 1900 edition are missing. These historic papers are scanned using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) in pdf format and are keyword serachable using the "find" or "search" function in your browser. Some topics of the year: The Fairhope Public Library opens on April 18, 1900. There are many articles and columns about the Library, mostly written by Marie Howland under the "Extracts from Mrs. Howland's Letter to Outside Friends" and "Jottings Among Our Books." Also included are lists of book donations and background on the Howland Collection. Marie Howland becomes the Associate Editor of the Fairhope Courier beginning with the June 1, 1900 edition. Several pictures of Fairhope are printed in 1900 including Dr. Clara Atkinson's house, and a "bathing scene" of a swimmer on the wharf. Other themes in 1900 are articles on acquiring more land (e.g. "We Want More Land" and "The Land Matter"), Mardi Gras, William Morphy's address to the Colony, Baldwin County politics including the issue of moving the County seat from Daphne to Bay Minette, many articles on crops, trees and gardens, "Personal and Local" news, the need for a boat for Fairhope, more advertisements (including for Fels soap), essays and editorials on tax reform and other matters, articles from other single tax and reform publications, letters from individuals in the reform movement, and more.
