Fairhope Courier newspapers for 1901. The paper was published twice per month on the 1st and 15th. All 24 editions are in this and are 8 pages except for the February 1st paper which is 6 pages. These historic papers are scanned using Optical Character Recongnition (OCR) in pdf format and are keyword searchable using the "find" or "search" function in your browser. 1901 is the year the Fairhope I bay boat steamer was constructed on the Fairhope beach, launched on June 27, 1901, towed to Mobile to get her engine installed, and started service on August 10, 1901. E. B. Gaston travels to the north and east in early 1901 to get donations (aka wharf certificate purchases) to help pay for the steamer. There are interesting letters from Gaston printed in several editions about his travels. Some of the other topics (but not limited to these) for 1901 are: articles about a telephone system for Fairhope, a public school for Fairhope, the Alabama Constitution of 1901, the move of the Baldwin County seat from Daphne to Bay Minette, the election of President Teddy Roosevelt, Local and Personal news in the Colony, Fairhope Public Library news, opening of the Fairhope Christian Church on the southwest corner of Church Street and St. James Avenue (see photos in these archives of the church), and other matters. In addition there are essays (e. g. "The Land Matter," "Fairhope vs. Speculators") and articles from single tax journals, reform publications and letters from single taxers printed. From the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation Archives. |
