Article on Page 1 of the April 1, 1899 edition of the Fairhope Courier titled "Suggestions To Our Friends" in which donations are requested to start a free library in Fairhope. Gaston, the paper's ediitor, makes reference to new Fairhope resident Mrs. Marie Howland's book collection as the nucleus of the library if only a building were available. He, once again, incorrectly says the Howland Collection numbers more than 2,000 volumes; Mrs. Howland herself has said it is probably about half that. From the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation Archives. |
