Article titled "Memories of the Round House" by Jerry B. Goss dated June 25, 2025. Goss is the grandson of William J. Herring and Sadie Ray Harris Herring. Between 1953-1955, the Herrings owned six acres in Montrose, Alabama. Their land had been called Tolstoy Park by an earlier owner, Henry James Stuart, who built a concrete and brick domed house there. In his article, Mr. Goss writes of his memories of the Round House where his grandparents lived during the construction of their new Clay CityTile house (located to the immediate west). Goss also writes of the experiences he, his brother and cousins had playing in the domed house, and other memories of 1950s Fairhope. Henry Stuart (1858-1946), known as Ye Olde Weaver and the Hermit of Montrose, hand built the unique concrete and brick domed house in 1925-1926, and lived in it until 1944 when he moved, at age 86, to Oregon to live with his family. Converse Harwell and wife Edith Harwell bought the Round House and the land from Stuart. They sold it to the Herrings in 1953. Photographs of the Round House during 1953-1955 are available in these Archives. Use keyword "Goss" to locate them. From the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation Archives, courtesy of Jerry B. Goss. |
