Description |
Meeting MInutes of the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation dated 1917. These Minutes were published in the Fairhope Courier newspaper and the scans appear as newspaper clippings. The Colony Council met approximately twice per month and included financial reports, lease transfers, and general FSTC business. Annual meeting minutes are included. Among highlights of 1917 are: January 17, 1917. Discussion by FSTC trustees Anne B. Call and A. M. Troyer of the 1916 hurricane's damage to the wharf and insurance issues. The storm had left the wharf closed for many months. April 16, 1917: Discussion that an experimental citrus orchard might be sited on Colony lands in conjunction with Alabama Polytechnic University (Auburn University). May 7, 1917: Formal bill of sale for the Library executed with Mrs. Marie Howland (handshake agreement took place on September 9, 1906). June 18, 1917: FSTC approves cooperation with the Town of Fairhope and the People's Railroad Company to light the wharf, the bath houses and the Magnolia platform with electric lights. June 27, 1917: FSTC declines to lease oil rights on Colony land. November 5, 1917: Expressions of sympathy from the FSTC to William Stimpson and family on the loss of their home to a fire; 1918 rents considered. December 3, 1917 and December 17, 1917: The FSTC will pay for wiring the Fairhope Public Library for lights and the Town of Fairhope will furnish free electric current. Up to this time, the Library used gratis acetylene gas for lights from Dr. Mershon's private supply, but he switched to electric hastening the change.
