Letter dated 8//8/1908 to E. B. Gaston from Joseph Fels in London, England. Fels has received a letter from Dr. Harris Greeno, mayor of Fairhope, and Fels has enclosed a copy of that letter and his reply to Gaston. Fels warns Gaston to not let it be known that he has these letters. Fels says that major single-tax men from the U. S., Murphy, Lawrence Purdy, and Louis Post, are in England for the Free Trade Conference. Fels gave Post a dinner and forty people attended. Fels questions Gaston, wondering if it would serve him to contact major single taxer like Bolton Hall, Daniel Kiefer and Pleydell to seek counsel about how to best deal with the new municipality. Fels says "in a multitude of counselors there may be safety." Fels encloses a check for $100 saying Gaston might be short of money and wants his donation to help solicit additional subscribers for the Fairhope Courier newspaper. Fels says he has received the first two editions of the Eastern Shore newspaper and advises Gaston not to react to Albright of "his kicks" in the Fairhope Courier. Fels discusses the pending lawsuit about the Fairhope steamer, and he presses Gaston for his opinion about Mr. Webb, the lawyer, and whether Webb needs assistance from another attorney with maritime experience. |
