Description |
Letter dated 2/1/1906 to Joseph Fels from D. S. Brown in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Brown is offering deeded land he owns in Fairhope, adjacent to Fairhope Single Tax Land, to Fels to purchase and then to give to the Colony. The land is near Mr. Oswalt's track; Mr. Delamare served as his attorney when he bought the land, and Mr. Gaston showed him around when he visited. Brown talks about his precarious financial position, which started when he invested in the Lake Superior Company and lost his money. He has had offers on the land before, namely from "Mrs. Dr. Hail" who wanted to buy a small tract to build a church and parsonage. The Executive Council of the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation rejected the offer, because they felt the church should be on Colony land. He has decided to sell the Fairhope land to settle his debts, and wants to sell it to Fels because Fels will then donate the land to the Colony. However, Brown has stipulations: he wants two acres reserved for himself when he moves to Fairhope, and he wants membership in the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation without cost to himself. He awaits Fels response. |
