Meeting MInutes of the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation for the year 1924. Includes general correspondence of the Corporation, financial reports, annual meeting mintues, Lessees' meeting minutes of October 17, 1924, and routine business conducted by the Colony Council. The FSTC usually met twice per month. Note: The first page of the 1924 Minutes can be found at 31_1923_1-14. Treasurer G. W. Wood died early in 1924; Mrs. Minnie Brown stepped aside as president, ran successfully for the Treasurer's position and Alex M. Troyer was elected president of the FSTC. Much FSTC acitivity centered around street improvements, in particular building curbs and gutters, opening streets, and working with the Town of Fairhope on those types of projects. The new "Courier Building" was built in 1924, home of the the Fairhope Courier newspaper and the FSTC. Fairhope Electric Company and Fairhope Art Shop are just two of the businesses which rented commercial space there. The People's Railroad ceased business and went into receivership. After bills were paid (The Eastern Shore Transporation Company was owed for additions to the Wharf), the FSTC wanted remaining funds returned to the FSTC's Wharf fund (May 1924). Later in the year, the railroad trestle was torn down, thus allowing for future widening of the wharf. Ownership of the Wharf returned to the FSTC. Work on the addition to the Fairhope Public Library building was started in 1924. The Library Association president, Mrs. Lydia Jane Newcomb Comings, requested that the FSTC approve inviting the Alabama Library Association to hold their annual meeting in Fairhope in April 1925; the Colony Council approved the request to extend the invitation. The issue of building a public high school was discussed, and the Colony Council voted $2500 toward the project. Much Colony business centered on the wharf and bay front area: building a parking shed for truckers, improving the wharf, preparing to the summer searson at the beach, dealing with sanitary and safety issues as well as law suit filed by Richard Harwell due an accident on the wharf chute.
