Letter dated 8/9/1897 to E.B. Gaston from L.G. Bostedo of Chicago, Illinois.Bostedo is writing Gaston about the Chicago Single Tax club, and more specifically, the picnic committee, both of which he is a member. The picnic committee is drafting a report and the matter of how Fairhope is applying single tax principles in practice is under discussion. Bostedo says H. H. Hardinge will be writing the report and he consider him a fair man. Mr. Clarence Moeller, who is also a member of the picnic committee has been critical of Fairhope. Bostedo is suggesting to Gaston that the Fairhope Industrial Association be reorganized and adopt a new constitution where the land would be deeded in trust to trustees. The concern seems that at the present time, while dividends are not paid, there could be the possibility that non-resident member/stockholders would demand payment. This, Bostedo says, is the weak part of the Fairhope plan, and he feels the change is necessary for Fairhope to receive the "general endorsement" of single taxers. Bostedo would like copies of letters that Gaston has received from Clarence Moeller. He assures Gaston he does not mean to be meddlesome in any way, but is supportive. |
