Lecture Series on Fairhope History dated April 5, 2016 with Dean Mosher. The writings of Henry George, the most widely read political economist of his age and one of the most influential reformers in American history. According to George, poverty, exploitation, lack of opportunity, and the unequal distribution of wealth and privilege resulted from the monopoly of scarce resources and the private ownership of land. His principal proposal was to make land common property. This idea of economic rent became known as the single tax program. Fairhope founders put this idea to a practical test by creating a land-owning association with the first land - 135 acres with a half-mile fronting the bay- which was acquired by January 1895. 1 hour video From the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation Archives. |
