Video interview dated February 2, 1995 with H. Reed Myers and Pierce E. "Bud" Frederick (1923-2000); interviewed by Flo Coleman Schneider and Ruth E. Rockwell. Pierce "Bud" Frederick appears on the right in the interview. He speaks first. Dr. Frederick was born in Fairhope in 1923. His parents were Paul A. Frederick (1894-1972) and Esther Pierce Frederick (1897-1997). His mother was the niece of Marietta Johnson; Pierce and his brother Paul called Mrs. Johnson "Aunt Mettie." He told many stories about Mrs. Johnson. Pierce was an optometrist in Fairhope. H. Reed Myers moved to Fairhope in 1932 as a nine-year old boy with his parents and lived here for about 4 years before the family returned to New Jersey. He related stories of growing up in Fairhope, playing in the gullies, then returning for visits over the years, finally retiring in Fairhope. Reed Myers is married to Anna Coleman Wood Myers, granddaughter of Clement L. Coleman and sister of Flo Coleman Schneider, one of the interviewers. There were stories shared between all four: Reed Myers, Bud Frederick, Flo Schneider and Ruth Rockwell. They spoke of the movie theaters in town, the people who ran them, the schools, Wednesday noon luncheons, basketball games in Comings Hall, and many other reminiscences. Video runs 36 minutes and 54 seconds. From the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation Archives. |
