Letter written to E. B. Gaston on 5/01/1894 from Calvin B. Power, Pa. He thinks Preston Co., Pa. is well located for the new colony. He tells of railroads that go through this area and the Cheat and Monongahela Rivers. A man told him that the soil is good, there is a 12 foot vein of hard coal, fine timber and land can be had for $2.00 to $6.00 per acre. Fairhope Constitution follows natural law. It is natural to immigrate East where population is dense if land can be easily freed. The lines of least resistance in producing wealth, tend towards the denser population for the colony. He thinks that the water power on the Potomac or Cheat Rivers will furnish cheap power to produce electricity that will haul immense amounts of freight to and from the market. He encloses names of single taxers. Andrew Swearingen, John Mathews, John Nicklow, and Ruben Smitty. Please send them the Liberty Bell and Constitution. He is promoting that the Colony be in the mountains. |
