Newspaper article from the January 1, 1898 edition of the Fairhope Courier reporting that Mr. C. K. Brown purchased 320 acres from Louis G. Bostedo and A. G. Nusbaum of Chicago, with an option for the Colony to purchase the land by January of 1899. Bostedo and Nusbaum had bought the land in 1895, holding it with an option for the Colony to purchase at 6% interest. They sold it to Brown. Brown's son Frank L. Brown and the latter's brother-in-law S. Howard Leach had a sawmill on the property. (Note: The Colony was constitutionally restricted from going into debt, so friends of the Colony were sometimes called upon to buy land and retain it until the Fairhope Industrial Association had the funds to buy.) NOTE: The issue of this land purchase was prevalent in Couriers issues in the latter half of 1898, and in the December 15, 1898 edition, a listing of individuals who donated money to buy the 320 acres is printed as well as letters from William Morphy, A. White, John H. Blakeny and others supporting the land purchase. See 1898_Courier to scroll through those pages. The land was eventually purchased on December 27, 1898 (see 1899_Courier January 1, 1899). From the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation Archives. |
