Fairhope Courier newspapers published in the year 1896. The Courier suspended publication in the early part of the year and five issues of the Courier in 1896 (1/15, 2/1, 2/15, 3/1 and 3/15) were not published. The Courier starts publication again on 4/1/1896. Beginning with Volume III on dated August 1, 1896, the Courier changed from a twice-monthly to a once-per month publication - all four pages long except for an eight page paper in July 1896. Note that the Volume and Issue number were printed incorrectly in several editions, and they were hand-corrected by someone long ago. These historic newspapers are scanned using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software in pdf format and are keyword searchable in your browser (typically under the "find" prompt). The editorship job was returned to E. B. Gaston effective with the April 1, 1896 edition and Mr. S. Vander Meulen became the business manager. J. H. Springer had served as editor in the fall of 1895 and the last edition he managed was the January 1, 1896 edition. (There was conflict in the Colony in the summer and fall of 1895 which caused Gaston to step away from the editing job.) In 1896, the paper vigorously and repeatedly promoted Fairhope as a resort community, a good place to live and worthy of the support of people with the means to help acquire more land. There are many articles about the Colony, the climate, the agriculture and bits and pieces of local interest to help convey what life was like to the many subscribers elsewhere. There was a constitutional amendment in March giving more control to the local single taxers. In October 1896, the Colony voted to lease land to non-members for the first time.
