Photograph dated 1920 by Frank Stewart, The Picture Man, titled "Organic School, Fairhope, Alabama, Putting up Street Signs." The photo is of Organic School (School of Organic Education) students with signs (for Church Street, Fairhope Avenue, Section Street and Bayview Avenue) they have made for Fairhope's downtown streets. Helen Porter Dyson has climbed the ladder and is nailing the Fairhope Avenue sign to a pole. An 'X' is marked by someone long ago to identify her. This picture is taken at the corner of Fairhope Avenue and Section Street. Henry Crawford's Merchandise Store is the building in the background. Crawford bought the Mershon Brothers General Merchandise Store in 1913 and operated the business until 1920, when he sold it to J. I. Pitman. These FSTC Online Archives include related pictures of that day. See PMG-1330 and FMH_0376. From the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation Archives.
